Few people know that problems with the musculoskeletal system can negatively affect work efficiency. It is they who often cause fatigue, irritability and drowsiness, which make it difficult to focus on business and reduce productivity. Elena Pastarnak, a traumatologist-orthopedist of the First Professional Network of Orthopedic Salons ORTEKA , tells what these symptoms indicate and how to deal with the cause of their appearance .
How are productivity and body position related to sedentary work?
Low productivity is directly related to the peculiarities of working in the office. Constant sitting in a sitting position negatively affects well-being. Keeping your back straight throughout the working day is not easy, because it is at least eight hours in one position. We often slouch, sit cross-legged or put it under us, lean on the table. All this leads to a change in the axis of the spine and a shift in the center of gravity, which reduces efficiency at work.
Unnatural posture :
When stooping, the back muscles suffer, as they are forced to support the body in an unnatural position. Muscles overstrain, trying to fight the wrong load. Their fatigue affects the general physical condition. Against the background of weakness of the muscular-ligamentous apparatus, various diseases of the musculoskeletal system develop, the back and other parts of the body hurt.
“Incorrect posture, typical of office workers, can cause a decrease in the mobility of the chest and diaphragm. In such cases, the work of the respiratory system becomes more complicated: due to a violation of gas exchange in the lungs, the brain receives less oxygen. If we sit at the table, leaning on our arm, or simply lower our head low when we look at the screen of the gadget, the vessels of the cervical region are infringed.

Because of this, headaches often occur , which, of course, also negatively affect productivity, ”explains orthopedic traumatologist Elena Pasternak. At work, we make the same movements by pressing the keyboard, the phone screen and clicking the mouse. Since the arms are constantly bent at the wrist, similar loads of the same type can cause the development of carpal tunnel syndrome.
“The disease occurs due to compression, swelling or infringement of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, which is responsible for the sensitivity of the palm, thumb, index and middle fingers. In carpal tunnel syndrome, these fingers become numb. Of course, such a condition affects the well-being and performance of a person, given that over time the wrist begins to hurt, ”explains orthopedic traumatologist Elena Pasternak.
Heaviness in the legs :
Due to low physical activity, the legs also suffer. Blood through the veins of the lower extremities returns to the heart from the bottom up. This process is controlled by venous valves. When moving, the muscles of the lower leg act on the veins, stimulating the blood to go up. In this case, the valves open and let it through. In a static position, the muscles do not contract and do not help outflow.
“This causes blood stasis, which is accompanied by swelling, a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the legs. Such unwanted symptoms lead to a deterioration in the general condition of a person, which can also reduce work efficiency. In addition, such loads caused by a sedentary lifestyle contribute to the development of varicose veins, ”says Elena Pasternak, an orthopedic traumatologist.
